Ever wanted to make a cartoon of yourself but didn't know where to start? Well, making a cartoon of yourself with the free downloadable software Gimp is easy - and we'll show you how it's done. First off you have to make sure you have the software, you can download gimp for free via their website https://www.gimp.org/downloads/
After you download the software you ready to start creating your very own cartoon. The next step would be to make sure you have the right picture of yourself that your going to want to make a cartoon. I recommend sizes no smaller than 560x560px for making yourself into a cartoon - you begin to loose to much detail and character when you shrink it down any smaller.
After you selected your picture your going to want to click and drop it into Gimp. The first thing we are going to do is remove the background from the image so we can focus on just the self-portrait we are going to turn into a cartoon.
On the left of the icon below we have the paths tool, on the right is the alfa-selection tool.
then click and drag in the area where your background is and then press 'delete' on your keyboard. You can also use the shortcut keys Ctrl+X to delete. If your image has a more complicated background image then your going to want to zoom in with the magnifying tool very close to the border of your self-portrait and use the paths tool to click and make a selection along the path of the image you want to keep.
After you selected just yourself in the picture your going to want to invert the selection you highlighted by pressing the shortcut keys Ctrl+I - now your ready to remove the background of the image by pressing the delete key. Now your ready to turn your self-portrait into a cartoon like the one below.
The effect is pretty simple using Gimp's stock filter. What your going to want to do is go up to the Filters tap scroll down to the 'Artistic' tap and click 'Cartoon'.
I recommend using the stock presets of the 'Cartoon' effect. You can do this multiple times in order to create the level of effect your after in your image. If your happy with the results then your all finished and now your self-portrait is converted into a cartoon.
To edit the cartoon further I recommend to mess around with the colors of the image. You can do this by going to the top and selecting the 'Colors' tab then scrolling down to the 'levels' option. You can play with the presets of the levels in order to come up with your own custom depth of color for your image.
